Our train-the-trainer programs allow you to become a Red Cross instructor and train others to save lives. A current basic level course certificate for the course you are interested in teaching is recommended.
Fundamentals of Instructor Training (3010)
This course is a prerequisite to all Red Cross instructor specialty courses. It is designed to offer potential Red Cross instructors an opportunity to become familiar with the services of the American Red cross as well as basic teaching techniques. Length: 4.5 hours. Continuing Education Units available.

Lay Responder First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor (HSSFA801)
The purpose of this course is to train instructor candidates to teach the following courses: • First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace • First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community • Blended Learning First Aid/CPR/AED • First Aid—Responding to Emergencies • Sport Safety Training Prerequisites: • Be at least 16 years of age; • Posses a Fundamentals of Instructor Training certificate issed within the past 12 months or hold a current Health & Safety Services Instructor Authorization; • Pass a precourse written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher on each component and successfully demonstrate compentency in the skills evaluation in accordance with the established skill standards. Length: 17 hours. Continuing Education Units available.

Water Safety Instructor
If you’re at least 16 and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and teach swimming and water safety courses. As a WSI, you can:
• Teach skills that can save a life
• Gain terrific work experience as an aquatics professional
• Earn money or join a volunteer team while you help people learn valuable skills
• Learn organizational and presentation skills that will help you in any career
• Help prepare swim coaches to prevent and respond to emergency situations
• Make a difference in people’s lives
This course will include Fundamentals of Instructor Training and Basic Water Rescue.
Continuing Education Units available.

Lifeguarding Instructor (HSAQU803)
This course will train instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Attendant, Lifeguard Management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission and Basic Water Rescue courses. Instructor candidates also will become familiar with GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow and the Water Safety presentations.

Prerequisites

  • Be at least 17 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the instructor course.
  • Possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate issued within the last year or possess a current national Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate.
  • Successfully complete the pre-course session. This includes passing the pre-course written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher for each of the three sections and demonstrating competency in the pre-course skills and scenarios evaluation.

This course will include Fundamentals of Instructor Training. Length: 30 hours. Continuing Education Units available.
