| Lifeguarding (HSAQU402) If you’re 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career, American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start. This course helps you develop skills and experience valued by colleges and future employers. You’ll develop new skills and learn how to deal effectively with people, fostering a “take charge” attitude. You’ll also get a participant’s manual and tips for securing a lifeguarding job. Classroom learning and hands-on practice build key skills: • Surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries • Rescue skills in the water and on land • First aid training and professional rescuer CPR to help you prepare for any emergency • Professional lifeguard responsibilities, like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons. Prerequisites: Minimum age of 15; swim 300 yards continuously; starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Please Note: If you are unable to demonstrate the above prerequisites you will not be allowed to continue with the course and you will forfeit your tuition. Length: 31.5 hours. Continuing Education Units available. Course Fee: $200 |

| Basic Water Rescue (HSAQU302) The purpose of this course is to provide individuals, such as public safety personnel, aquatic fitness instructors and aquatic therapists with information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. This course will also prepare individuals for aquatic emergencies by teaching them how to protect themselves while assisting others. Come prepared to get wet! This course is required for organizations that want to bring groups of children or adults for recreational swimming to any pool operated by the City of Austin. To receive a course completion certificate, a participant MUST: • Attend the entire class session • Demonstrate competency in each skill taughts in the course (perform each skill correctly without coaching or assistance) • Correctly answer at least 80% of the questions in the final written exam Length: 4.5 hours, includes 1 hour pool work. Continuing Education Units available.
